Flow

Excessive intensity and duration of work is an important contributor to stress and has a proven role as a risk factor for chronic disease. However, there is still little research on how to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by reducing the workplace stress of employees.
This is the story of how I designed the 'Flow Healthcare Suite' - a caring healthcare service for the medically illiterate.

My Role

This is my personal project, from March 2021 to October 2021, I was responsible for the user research, wireframe prototyping, iterations and final visual design of the project.

The Challenge

Workers tend to neglect their physical condition because they think they are still young, have a stable lifestyle and are not the ones who need to pay too much attention to their health. In addition, most adults lack the ability to understand professional medical knowledge, so many people don't know the actual condition of their body, even though most companies offer periodic physical check-ups for their employees.

The Approach
Stylish and Readable

Therefore, a stylish and readable health testing device is the best choice for office workers who do not understand medical expertise. The stylish product design will not become a heavy psychological pressure, and may even become a fashionable decoration to attract the attention of friends. The easy-to-read body data report ensures that they can keep an eye on their body's changes and protect their health.

The Discovery
Discussed a Lot but Did Little

Through interviews with employees, employers and recruitment professionals, I have learned that employee wellness is a topic that is often discussed but gets little traction. A company's investment in employee health and the company's profits are at opposite ends of the same scale, and this needs to be discussed more to achieve a stable balance. In addition, the issue of employee privacy needs to be given equal attention.

Initial Insights

If I really want to improve the health of my employees in the workplace, I need to provide a more comprehensive solution that takes into account the needs of our users in the following areas
- Employees' private information needs to be protected.
- Companies should not be pressured to invest in the health of their employees.
- Companies should realise that employee wellness contributes to increased productivity and a better work atmosphere.

Reframing the Problem
Persona

Our target users are young people who are often overworked, leading to irregular living arrangements in the current times. They often ignore the disease signals from their bodies because they are young. This is the main reason why there is a trend towards younger people with cardiovascular diseases. I use Persona to facilitate discussions about user needs, desires and different usage contexts.

Journey Map

Signs of ill health mostly occur at the end of a user's long hours of overtime work. During this period, users tend to ignore physical signals in order to get their work done as quickly as possible. And because most of them cannot read professional data and graphs, it is easy to overlook physical abnormalities in time, even if they are wearing an ECG monitor.

How can disease signals from the heart be identified in advance, making ECG information more readable and improving employee well-being in a mixed work environment?

The Vision
A Considerate Healthcare Service for the Medically Illiterate

My vision is to create a new fashion trend where health monitoring is not for a specific group of people, but for all. the MIT-BIH database provides real-time health analysis and advice through ECG monitoring and photoelectric induction.

The Requirement
Comfortability, Timeliness, Accuracy and Readability

The new generation of heart monitors is not only a health care device, but also a friend who accompanies you and keeps an eye on your health.

The Framework
Setting the Design Direction

I took a top‐down approach to define the overall structure of the experience. Sketching and storyboarding, I generated stacks of ideas about the arrangement of UI, functional and data elements, and interactive behaviors. Starting broad, my vision began evolving into something tangible. A high‐level design language, interactions, and the app's anatomy began to piece together.

Quick Solution Exploration

Based on the inspiration, I quickly hand-drawn several design plans, and after comparative analysis, I got the final design plan. The final design plan includes three products, namely patch-type ECG monitor, wearable display wristband, and wireless charger.

Rating Scale of Health Condition

The different health states are visualised by colour, frequency of appearance, particle intensity and particle speed, informing the user of their health status in a visual way.

Wristband Interface Design

Users can learn about their real-time physical health and acquire assistance through the physical condition display, record & urgent help, and detailed information display of the wearable wristband.

Next Step
More Humanistic, More Useful

1. Make the product smaller and more comfortable to enhance the user's enjoyment of using it.
2. Consider how different people use the products in different scenarios and provide more options in terms of functionality and appearance.
3. Work with insurance companies and healthcare systems to get employees' health issues noticed and addressed more quickly.
